Boiler pumps are designed to move the water that was heated in the boiler, around the home. This is done to distribute the heat to the home. The pumps need to be quiet. The rate at which the water is pumped will affect the noise level. There are two major types of pumps in residential homes; a cartridge pump, and an open pump.

A open pump has a coupler that connectes the motor to the actual pump. The disadvantage of this type is, it requires maintenance. The advantage to this type, is that it can be serviced without replacing the whole pump assembly.

The cartridge pump is a completly sealed pump. There is no maintenance that is needed. If anything goes bad with this type, the whole pump needs to be replaced.
