Evaporators are located by the furnace, usually on top of the furnace. There are two major types of evaporators; cased and uncased. The evaporator is where the heat from the home is absorbed. Like a sponge sucking up the water, then ringing out the water outside in the condenser. The cased coil has a housing around it and is very easy to idenify. The advantage is that if the evaporator ever needs to be cleaned or serviced, the doors to gain access to the evaporator, can be removed very easy without cutting into the duct work. The uncased coil is coverd by the sheet metal on top of the furnace and has to be cut away, and then patched when service is need to the evaporator. Uncased coils are mostly V shaped, with a drain pan at the bottom to collect the water that is removed from the humid air. They need to be pitched toward the drain line, so the water can drain out freely.
