Thermostats are used to measure the air temperture and then tell the furance or air condtioner when to come on and when to turn off. There are two major catagoires; digital and non digital. They are usually wired with 24VAC from the furnace. The digital ones have batteries in them to store the memory.
Digital thermostats have several advantages over non-digitals. First, they can be programmed. When they are programmed, the furnace can than be regulated in terms of what time you might want a specfic temperture. So when you go to work, in the heating season, the empty house doesn't have to stay so warm. The thermostat can be prgramed to bring the temperture up to your desired comfort just before you get home. This can save money on your energy cost per year. Another advantage is the safety circuit, that prevents the air conditioner from turning on and off too soon. This can save your compressor from short cycling, and premature failure.
Non-digital thermostats can only be set to one temperature. To change the setting, you have to manually do it. Every time you want a different desired temperture, you have to manually adjust the thermostat. If you forget to turn down the heat, such as when you go to work or sleep, the thermostat continue to supply heat at the current set temperature.
